One of the best things about the islands of Hawaii is the hiking adventures. The number of trails is numerous and will have you busier than a one handed chicken plucker. There is no shortage of outdoor activity and exploration while spending time in Hawaii. Together with its beautiful comfortable climate and minus the snakes and dangerous wildlife, the Aloha state is top notch when it comes to hiking. So please read on to learn about these unique hikes on Oahu and why they are the best.

A Guide To Hiking Trails on Oahu

If you are someone who loves to get outdoors and explore, then these hiking trails will certainly satisfy your thirst for adventure. Continue reading to learn the highlights and features and how these Oahu trails compare.

The Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail

The islands of Hawaii are full of beautiful rugged trails that include a climate just perfect for easy or intense trekking. This amazing path takes you through a dry, shady ridge to the summit of the Ko’olau Range. Some of my favorite trees are located on this route which includes an abundant forest of Cook pines. The length is a 5 mile round trip, at 1800 feet elevation gain and is suitable for a novice to intermediate hiker.

Views along the Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail Oahu, Hawaii

Just when you think you are almost to the top, you encounter yet another set of incline stairs. But if you continue to work through this challenging climb, you won’t be disappointed. Because all of the sudden you reach a viewpoint of stunning Kailua Bay reaching to Mokapu Peninsula. You’ll enjoy the sights of Pu’u o Kona which is the flat topped peak on the summit ridge when you look out towards to the left. Directions:

Hawaii Hiking Koko Crater Rim Trail

Koko Crater Rim Trail

Koko Crater consists of a volcanic cone as the backdrop of Halona blowhole and Sandy Beach. The ever popular Koko Crater stairs is another hiking path that connects to Koko Crater. This stairs route has grown in visitation in recent years. Although this short yet thrilling trail is mostly a steep scramble on large boulders and loose rocks, it doesn’t disappoint. The duration is a 2 mile round trip / loop with the elevation gain of 1200 feet. The trail is considered medium danger and appropriate for intermediate hikers.

There are a few narrow stretches of which require careful footing. You’ll also encounter cactus with needles impeding the trail so take extra precaution. The plants and foliage are quite abundant on this hike.  Sections of the trail take you through the Christmas berry, and koa haole as well as other native shrubs. Of course, there are plenty of views that will take your breath away. Note: The trailhead is in the Botanical Gardens located here. Directions:

Sunrise hike at Koko Crater Rim Trail Oahu

Hikers Tip: It is recommended to do this hike in the morning to avoid higher winds. Also, a sunrise hike at Koko Crater is absolutely incredible!

Ka’ala Natural Area Reserve above Wai’anae

Hiking Ka’ala encompasses a rugged path straight up the highest mountain on O’ahu! What you’ll experience is a wander through misty tree tunnels, native shrubs, and strawberry guava and Christmas berry trees. This uneventful trek is an 8 mile round trip and 3500 feet elevation gain. These types of climbs usually have switchbacks infused in the trail, but you really won’t find them here. This is what makes this trail full of thrill and challenge. Keep in mind, the trail path may be overgrown with sticky or sharp shrubs and plants.

Ka'ala Natural Area Reserve, tallest peak on Oahu.

Be prepared to hike for hours, it took me about 6 hours with a few stops for photos and rest. Bring plenty of fluids and snacks to keep your energy levels intact. Once you reach the summit, you’ll notice a large radon tower and other government areas. It is a flat area that includes grassy fields and some shrubbery. It is not recommended to take on this hike if it’s raining. Oh I can’t imagine hiking on those slippery steep trails in rainy wet conditions. Be safe out there if you do. Directions:

Hawaii’s Mount Olympus Hike Wa’ahila Ridge State Recreational Area

The Wa’ahila Ridge State Recreational Area is a beautiful picnic and park area in the city of Honolulu. Filled with beautiful Cook pines and native shrubs, this hiking adventure is an unexpected delight. Just as beautiful the views are the birds singing and dancing through the trees. You may catch a glimpse of the white-rumped shama singing in the wind.

Mount Olympus, Wa'ahila Ridge Trail

It’s location is in the back of Manoa Valley and has an elevation gain of 1500 feet. The trail is considered novice and intermediate, and is a 6 mile round trip adventure! Consisting of steep climbs and tree root trail-ways, you’ll find yourself breathing heavy. There are a handful of large boulders to scramble. And a rope is available to assist in case it’s needed. The further you incline, the thicker the vegetation becomes. Directions:

Kahana Valley State Park Kapa’ele’ele Hiking Trail

Kapaelele Hiking Trail Kahana Valley

Adventuring through this beautiful state park has a variety of climbing, viewpoints, trees and history. You might feel as though you are in an episode of Jurassic Park with sneak peek spots of the valley overgrown and lush with green. As the top becomes closer, it becomes steep and rocky. Reaching near the top, views of the bay and Kahana Valley are the perfect eye candy!

Ka’ena Point Secret Pillbox Hike

In order to find the secret pillbox at Ka’ena Point state park area, you’ll begin the trail at the western part of Oahu. As you trek along this route, Hawaii quickly reminds you the vast beauty and nature the islands offer.  In my opinion, exploring the west side on this trail is even more beautiful than from the other route (from the Mokulēʻia or north side).

Ka'ena Point Secret Pillbox Hike

Once you reach the fence, you will head east and look for what might appear to be a trail. If you look up to see the pillbox above you, the trail will become more defined. Climb until you reach the first pillbox, then you’ve only got a short distance higher to reach the top. And these views will certainly captivate you! These pillboxes are hidden bunkers made of concrete built mostly into the hillside at higher elevations. They were primarily used during World War 2 and utilized as lookouts or defensive weaponry.

Explore Hawaii With Responsibility

The adventures in Hawaii are endless. From the lush green valleys to the Mana of the beaches, you will sure to be blessed with rewarding experiences in these outdoors. It is recommended to clean your shoes off before and after every hike on Oahu. This is to prevent the spread of invasive species and protect the flora and fauna of Hawaii. Enjoy exploring Hawaii!
